چکیده

We study the populations of X-ray sources in the Milky Way in the 15-55 keV band using a deep survey with the BAT instrument aboard the Swift observatory. We present the logN-logS distributions of the various source types and we analyze their variability and spectra. For the low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and the high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) we derive the luminosity functions to a limiting luminosity of LX ∼ 7× 10 34 erg s. Our results confirm the previously found flattening of the LMXB luminosity function below a luminosity of LX ∼ 10 37 erg s. The luminosity function of the HMXBs is found to be significantly flatter in the 15-55 keV band than in the 2-10 keV band. From the luminosity functions we estimate the ratios of the hard X-ray luminosity from HMXBs to the star-formation rate, and the LMXB luminosity to the stellar mass. We use these to estimate the X-ray emissivity in the local universe from X-ray binaries and show that it constitutes only a small fraction of the hard X-ray background. A ROSAT Bright Source Catalog Survey with the Swift Satellite

We consider the prospects for a complete survey of the 18,811 sources of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (BSC) with NASA’s Swift gamma-ray burst (GRB) mission. By observing each BSC source for 500 s with the satellite’s imaging X-ray and UV/optical telescopes, this “Swift Bright (Source) Catalog Survey” (Swift-BCS) would derive <5 source positions for all BSC sources that have no...

The Swift/BAT High Latitude Survey: First Results

We present preliminary results from the first 3 months of the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) high galactic latitude survey in the 14–195 keV band. The survey reaches a flux of ∼ 10 erg cm s and has ∼ 2.7 (90% confidence) positional uncertainties for the faintest sources. This represents the most sensitive survey to date in this energy band. These data confirm the conjectures that a high ener...

The Suzaku View of the Swift/BAT AGNs (II): Time Variability and Spectra of Five “Hidden” AGNs

The fraction of Compton thick sources is one of the main uncertainties left in understanding the AGN population. The Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) all-sky survey, for the first time gives us an unbiased sample of AGN for all but the most heavily absorbed sourcesNH> 10 25 cm−2). Still, the BAT spectra (14 – 195 keV) are time-averaged over months of observations and therefore hard to compare ...

The Swift Bat X-ray Survey. Iii. X-ray Spectra and Statistical Properties

In this concluding part of the series of three papers dedicated to the Swift BAT hard X-ray survey (BXS), we focus on the X-ray spectral analysis and statistical properties of the source sample. Using a dedicated method to extract time-averaged spectra of BAT sources, we show that Galactic sources have, generally, softer spectra than extragalactic objects and that Seyfert 2 galaxies are harder ...
